So much has happened over the last few weeks that I do not even know where to begin. I am sorry for not writing sooner but we have been all out with the snow and all the animals. The biggest accomplishment of the month is finishing our mobile chicken house! After hours, days, weeks and many friends the chickens have their new digs! Zach and I would like to thank: Casey Loose for an extra hand and the design of the nesting boxes, Drew Sanderford for always being willing to help and Chief Adam Fehd for just being the one in charge. Anthony and David also went above and beyond yet again to help us finish the house. Our current-laying hens moved in last night and seem to love the new house. The pigs have moved up to the laying hens old house, the green house to root around and prepare my soil for the summer garden.

400 chicks arrived today safe and sound. They are all full of energy and doing extremely well.Currently we have 2 separate brooding stalls for our chicks. The first batch of chicks are a month older because of the snow and shipping delays, so we decided to keep them separate until spring when they all can join the other ladies in the new mobile house. The mobile chicken house will allows us to give the chickens fresh pasture everyday and provide them with a safe place to sleep and lay eggs. I feel like we need a name for the mobile chicken house, if you have any great ideas please email me at sara@timbercreekorganics.net with your thoughts.

We are now proud owners of a herd of cattle! There are 12 cows that are expecting in the fall and 8 calves in this particular herd. The cattle are all Angus crosses. They come from a very good friend who is now focusing on breeding roping cattle instead of beef cattle. This group is super friendly, fantastic mothers and we know all the history on them. For us, history on the herd is very important since this is our first go. Buying them from friends means that we also gain the benefit of a great resource for questions and problems that crop up along the way! We have not picked our cattle up yet because of the snow! UGH!! Hopefully we will be able to get the trucks and trailers into the fields to pick them up and bring them home in the next week or so.
{extended}

Welcome to Timbercreek Farm. It is January 1st and most people are making New Year’s Resolutions but we are starting our life-long journey to change our lives as well as the lives of folks around us. We are Sara and Zach Miller and we are embarking on a mission to bring good food to our community here in Charlottesville, Virginia. Our aim is to do this in a sustainable and humane way that celebrates the wonderful biodiversity of our farm while guaranteeing you our customer the very best pastured eggs and meats.

Our goals for this year include: acquiring a herd of cattle, a flock of egg layers, some pastured broilers, pigs and eventually turkeys. WOW! I know that is a lot of animals but we are so excited we can barely sleep at night. Actually, that’s not true. We are working so hard that we can barely stay awake past 8PM! Zach and I have a great team behind us not only for help out in the field but also for support in kicking this farm into gear.

I have a few folks that I would like to introduce, as they will continue to be a big part of our daily lives and our business. First and foremost Milt and Pat Edgerton, Zach’s grandparents. They own this amazing farm. They have both supported us in many ways but the biggest thing they have done is allowed us to live and start a business on their farm. We certainly would not be starting where we are without them! Diane and Ethan Miller, Zach’s parents, own adjacent land that they have generously donated to the timbercreek organics project. Diane has also given us some amazing resources for our education. She introduced us to Joel Salatin who has inspired our model, and has contributed lots of other resources to help us get our operation started.

David Steppe, Anthony Steppe and Judi Cheape are the backbone of our operation. David brings a long family history of farming and good work ethic to our team. We have known and worked with David for a long time. His ‘fix anything’ ability is a vital asset. Anthony is David’s nephew. He has a great sense of humor and believes no task is overwhelming or too hard. He has a way with animals that you simply cannot teach. It is a natural gift. Judi is our accountant. Without her we would be lost. She crunches numbers and counts the pennies. It’s amazing how quickly saving one cent here and there can add up to a thousand dollars. Judi keeps us on track and helps us manage our costs as we push forward.

These are our people and we cannot imagine getting started without them. Zach and I have been preparing for 2010 for three years and it is hard to believe that it is here! Happy New Years everyone and best of luck for 2010.
{extended}
