We are going to be hosting a workshop here at the farm on Saturday June 9th on the basics of organic gardening. The workshop will be lead by Judah Lyons our vegetable gardener. Judah specializes in biodynamic cultivation and brings a wealth of knowledge about organic methods to solve disease and insect problems. In this workshop he will go through the steps of how to efficiently start seeds at home, different ways to setup a garden that works for your family, how to feed and fight insect and disease problems organically and the importance of soil. Zach will also speak about ways to make your own compost at home that will turn your garbage (food waste) into “black gold” also known as compost. The workshop will be 5 hours long and will include lunch. We will start promptly at 10AM and will have things wrapped up by 3PM. Please email me for more information or to sign up. The fee for the workshop is $85.

No mad cow disease here.

For all of you who are worried about mad cow disease and want to know where your beef comes from it is time to find a local farmer. Not only are you making a healthier decision for you and your family but also you are supporting your community. When you have a question about your food wouldn’t it be nice to ask the farmer directly? On average it takes 1,500 miles for food to reach your refrigerator! 1,500 MILES!! Yes, you read that correctly. If it takes that many miles to reach your fridge then how old is the food you are buying at the grocery store?? The answer to that question most of us will never know. In 1910 40% of local food dollars stayed in the community and today it is only 7%! You as the consumer have control over where your food comes from and it is up to you to make a difference. FIND A LOCAL FARMER!

We are excited to announce we will hold a farmer’s market here at the farm every Friday afternoon from 1PM to 6PM starting May 11th. Each week we will have fresh chicken along with our other meats and eggs. We have started a large garden this with the hope to grow enough produce to share with all of you. Judah Lyons is a great friend and customer who brings a wealth of knowledge and love for gardening to TCO. Judah will have fresh produce each week available at the market as well. All the produce is being grown here at the farm and of course grown organically. I hope all of you will be able to make it out to the farm one Friday this spring.

It has been a beautiful Spring so far! Lots of rain means lots of hay. If only we could get a break in the action we might get some made!

Thanks to all of your great support, timbercreek products are starting to gain some traction in the market place. We have a few new restaurants that have expressed interest in offering timbercreek meats as regular features of their menus. We are working out the details, but expect to find timbercreek this summer at Michael’s Bistro on the corner, Maya, the C&O, the Brookeville, and of course, Revolutionary Soup -our long time supporters and real champions of the local food movement.

Eggs continue to sell well at Whole Foods. Delivery day is Friday for all of you weekend shoppers. Rumor has it that when Whole Foods moves to its new store, timbercreek eggs will be offered in an open display case where you may assemble the exact number and selection of colors that you desire. In any case, it has been a pleasure to work with WFM. They continue to set a precedent as a large retailer engaged in the local food economy.

But wait there’s more! The most important news of the week is that fresh chicken is once again available at timbercreek! We processed our first batch of 2011 on Thursday with the assistance of an all-star team. From now until the end of October you may pick up fresh chicken Friday and Saturday afternoons here at the farm. Please call or email a few days in advance to reserve your bird(s). Also, for one-stop shopping, ask about our beef and pork availability and make it a timbercreek tri-fecta.

We look forward to seeing you all very soon.

The first day of spring is less than a month away. Hopefully the groundhog was right and spring will come early this year. With the advent of the new growing season, things here at Timbercreek Farm are gearing up. On Wednesday our first piglets of 2011 arrived. They have settled in well. Chicks will start arriving in late March and we are hurrying to get their accommodations ready. Because our eggs have been selling so well at Whole Foods we are doubling the laying flock for 2011. Also new this year, we are going to have a stand at the Charlottesville Farmer’s Market.

As always, we love seeing you here at the farm so break your winter hibernation by coming out for a visit!

Welcome to the new timbercreek organics web site! It has been a very busy summer here at the farm as is easy to see from our lack of recent updates. However, after some gentle arm twisting and a lot of help from Debra at drw Design we are pleased to be able to launch this very improved site that will allow us to stay in touch and give folks regular insight into the goings-on here at Timbercreek. Please take some time to surf around and check out the new features. We have posted our current retail pricing inside each of the product pages along with a description of some of the basic principles that make what we do different.

Winter is coming soon, and with it, the end of our first full growing season. We are pleased with the wonderful feedback we have received from all of our customers. Thank you all for making the choice to opt out and make the journey with us.
